My grandpa is my hero because he is brave. He was a courageous medic in World War II who saved the lives of many soldiers who were injured. He never did surgery, but fixed open cuts and wounds.
Grandpa wasn't drafted into the army but enlisted on November 11, 1942 in the ordinance unit that took care of supplies, ammunition and repaired vehicles. My grandpa didn't choose to be a medic, but the medical unit was one man short, so the army forced him to accept that responsibility even though he had no medical experience. He was nervous taking the job, but he wouldn't let down his country.
Fort Devins, Massachusetts was the first place my grandpa was stationed. From there he went to Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland to receive basic training. After he got his training, he was sent to Camp Perry, Ohio. Fort Knox, Kentucky was his next assignment. Camp Campbell, Kentucky was the place he went to for additional training. Then he went oversees on the Queen Elizabeth I to Southampton, United Kingdom.
While in Soisson, France dealing with many train cars filled with loads of ammunition, there were a number of soldiers working on a railroad with a train full of ammunition. All of a sudden, explosions started to happen, and his medical unit was rushed over to the railroad.
Are you scared? one of my grandpa's assistants asked him. Yeah. A little. I haven't had any big excitement. my grandpa answered. My grandpa's heartbeat started going faster. Thoughts raced through his mind. Once he got to the railroad, everybody in his medical unit went over to the injured soldiers and helped them get back into the truck they had come in. Once all of the injured soldiers were back in the truck, the driver took them to the hospital.
When my grandpa thinks back on this story, he realizes that any second all the ammunition could have exploded and he could have died.
